Investigating Solids, Liquids, and Gases with Toys: States of Matter and Changes of State

By: Jerry Sarquis, Lynn hogue, Mickey Sarquis and Linda Woodward

    Review:
This book is part of an NSF project. If you have done traditional lab demonstrations concerning solids, liquids and gases, you will recongnize many of the activities in this book. Many have been adapted to group activities and the instructions and background information are very good. The book calls for the use of simple materials and supplies.

  • A Matter of Misconceptions
As facilitators of learning we have the opportunity to orchestrate experiences that help children construct understanding. Often this requires the art of unraveling misconceptions associated with a given concept and building experiences that will provide evidence that can stand in contrast to the misconception. This is certainly one worth pursuing. One of the misconceptions associated with matter provides us with the opportunity to explore phase change through the lens of a "system".
