Other Information: Come Back, Salmon, tells in words and photos the true story of a field trip by 5th graders in Everett, Washington, that turned into a community stream restoration project. The book uses the students enthusiasm and remarkable success to encourage this work elsewhere. It also explores the life cycle of the salmon in informative detail.
Ocean View Elementary School began its first stages of becoming a maritime pathway school in the 1995-96 school year. As a maritime pathway school, each class experiences monthly field study opportunities connecting maritime knowledge to the state's standards of learning.
The teacher and I were frustrated. These seventh and eighth grade students had lived along the Hudson River all of their lives but still didn't "know" the river. How could we help these students feel a connections to their river and gain a better understanding of the complexities of scientific research?
