Review: This book has the subtitle, "Inspiring Girls to Think Mathematically." The authors' approach is through literature-based math instruction, using books and stories with strong female characters and then having students develop the mathematical implications. Dozens of books are explored in Feistey Females, including Megan McDonald's Insects Are My Life and Arthur Levine's Pearl Moscowitz's Last Stand. The good ideas in this book for teachers could be applied in a multitude of classrooms, no matter what basic strategies you use to teach math.

Although they realize they need to learn to work with boys on problem solving in mathematics, the third and fourth grade girls participating in this class value time doing mathematics without boys around.
